〜からには vs 〜以上は vs 〜上は kara ni wa · ijou wa · ue wa

〜からには, 〜以上は, and 〜上は all treat a fact as a premise for what follows. からには often sounds like “now that,” especially with resolve or responsibility. 以上は and 上は can sound more formal, but their meanings overlap considerably. The following clause may express an obligation, intention, or conclusion; it is not a fixed promise form.

Structure

How do you form からには, 以上は and 上は?

Verb/い-adj[plain]・な-adj である・Noun である+からには

引き受けたからには, 日本にいるからには. Followed by 〜つもりだ, 〜たい, 〜べきだ, or a command.

Verb/い-adj[plain]・な-adj である・Noun である+以上(は)

引き受けた以上. The は is optional. 引き受けた以上に would use a different, comparative construction.

Verb[plain past / dictionary]+上は

決めた上は, こうなった上は. Read うえは. A formal expression; also occurs in set phrases.

Verb[plain past]/Noun の+上で

読んだ上で, 相談の上で. Means “after doing, and on that basis.” The first action is a preliminary step or basis for the second.

Meaning

What's the difference between からには, 以上は and 上は?

All three connect a premise to what follows from it. Resolve and obligation can appear with both からには and 以上(は); they do not divide neatly into emotion versus logic.

からには often emphasizes commitment. 引き受けたからには、最後までやります presents taking the job as a reason to see it through. It can also address another person’s responsibility, as in 約束したからには、守ってください.

以上(は)treats the premise as a basis for a consequence. 引き受けた以上、途中でやめるわけにはいきません expresses the obligation arising from accepting. Depending on the sentence, 以上 can also introduce a decision or determination.

上は is a formal alternative in this use. 決めた上は and こうなった上は introduce what must or will follow from that situation. Its suitability depends on the sentence and register; it is not simply an obsolete expression.

た上で describes a different relationship. 契約書をよく読んだ上でサインしてください asks someone to read first and then sign on that basis. This is more than mere sequence. Dictionary-form 上で has other uses, such as “in doing” or “when doing.”

Watch out

Where does this go wrong?

Confusing た上で with 上は

相談した上で決めます makes consultation a preliminary step informing the decision. 上は instead presents a situation as a premise for what follows.

Restricting からには to your own resolve

It can also introduce a demand or obligation concerning someone else: 約束したからには、守ってください. Read the entire sentence rather than selecting the form solely by who is acting.

Confusing the different meanings of 以上

18歳以上 means “18 and over”; 思った以上に難しい means “harder than expected.” In 引き受けた以上, it links a premise to a consequence. Check the construction, not just the word.

Also asked

Questions people ask about からには, 以上は and 上は

Is からには always emotional and 以上 always factual?

No. からには often emphasizes resolve or a demand, but 以上 can also accompany determination. They overlap; “emotion versus logic” is not a reliable rule for every sentence.

Do I need the は in 以上は?

No. 引き受けた以上 and 引き受けた以上は are both possible. The presence of は is not a dependable speech-versus-writing rule.

Can these follow a noun?

For からには and 以上, noun + である is a useful affirmative pattern: プロであるからには, 学生である以上. 上は is commonly taught after a verb’s dictionary or た-form. Bare 学生以上 has a different meaning.

Is 上は still useful?

Yes. Learn to recognize its formal tone, especially in expressions such as こうなった上は. Choose it when that register suits the context, rather than assuming that 以上 is interchangeable in every sentence.

What is the difference between た上で and てから?

てから establishes sequence. た上で presents the first action as a step that informs or prepares for the second, as in 検査した上で判断する.

Can からには end the sentence?

It normally introduces a following clause expressing what follows from the premise. In a complete learner example, include that clause; conversational ellipsis depends on context.
