Requirements

Which iPhones can run rikAI

rikAI requires iOS 17 or later on iPhone. Translation and dictionary tools support phones with at least 2 GB of memory. Local Ask requires at least 4 GB; lower-memory phones, including iPhone XR and iPhone SE (2nd generation), can use optional cloud Ask with explicit permission and an internet connection.

You can decline or turn off cloud Ask on every phone. Translation and dictionary tools remain available; Ask is unavailable on a lower-memory phone while cloud permission is off. If the app closes while loading, contact support with your device and iOS version. rikAI is an iPhone app; it is not designed for iPad layouts.

Offline

Does rikAI need an internet connection?

Translation, dictionary lookup, grammar notes, text recognition and pronunciation practice work on-device once the required resources are installed. Ask works on-device on iPhones with at least 4 GB of memory and an installed reasoning model. If you enable Settings → Model → Ask with ChatGPT, questions and their context go through rikAI’s Cloudflare service to GPT-5 nano. Cloud answers require internet and are limited to up to 10 per device per UTC day free or 200 with Pro; other service limits can apply. On phones that support local Ask, turning cloud Ask off or reaching the device’s daily cloud quota uses the local model. A connection or service error does not automatically retry locally. On lower-memory phones, Ask requires cloud permission, internet and an available cloud allowance. Readers, downloads, purchases and allowance checks also use the network. See the privacy policy.

Storage

Downloads, storage and backups

  • What's installed. Settings → Model lists every model on the device, whether it is built into the app or downloaded, and how much space it takes.
  • The natural voice. The VOICEVOX voice is an optional download of about 140 MB. Preferences → Voice has Remove the natural voice download; removing it frees the space and falls back to the system voice.
  • Built-in models cannot be removed — they are part of the app, so deleting them would mean deleting rikAI.
  • Backups. Models and voice packs are excluded from iCloud and computer backups on purpose: they are large and always re-downloadable, and they would otherwise fill your backup. Your chats and settings are included like other app data.

Anki

Sending cards to Anki

Compatible text cards can be sent directly to AnkiMobile on the same phone after preset setup. Cards containing audio are saved to rikAI’s queue: choose Export for Anki, then import the .apkg file in AnkiMobile or desktop Anki. You do not need AnkiMobile to collect and export cards. If a direct card is refused, the note type in your preset is usually missing a field rikAI is sending — open the Anki preset in rikAI and match the field names to your note type.

Readers

The Netflix, YouTube and X readers

  • What they are. Netflix, YouTube and X, opened inside rikAI, with the Japanese made tappable: subtitles and posts are split into words with furigana, and a tap opens the word card. Photos in a post get a scan button. The word cards, readings and scanning all run offline on your iPhone; the browsing itself is the real site over your connection.
  • Signing in. Netflix requires your own eligible account and available Japanese subtitles. YouTube and X may offer signed-out access. Signed out, the YouTube reader opens a Japanese feed and the X reader a live search for popular Japanese posts. If you sign in, you stay signed in between launches and see your own timeline. To sign out, use the site's own sign-out; rikAI has no account of its own to sign out of.
  • "This video has no Japanese subtitles." The reader uses the video's Japanese caption track, preferring a real one over YouTube's auto-generated captions. A video with neither cannot be read along — there is nothing to read.
  • Subtitles won't load. Caption fetching depends on a service we do not control. If it fails on every video rather than one, YouTube has probably changed something on their end; email us and we will push a fix.
  • Whose rules apply. Inside the readers you are on Netflix’s, Google’s and X’s services, under their terms and privacy policies, and their content is theirs — not ours, and not something we can moderate or vouch for. See the terms and the privacy policy.

Privacy

What rikAI collects

Cloud Ask is off by default. When enabled, it shares your question, selected text and translation, recent conversation context and assistant preferences with Cloudflare and OpenAI. Text from a photo or reader may be included; the source image and audio are not uploaded through Ask. Our service also processes a persistent random device ID, Pro status, IP address and usage counts. Free readers report elapsed time and that device ID even with cloud Ask off. Turn cloud Ask off in Settings to stop future AI requests; deleting local chats does not delete provider records already created. Read the privacy policy for retention and privacy requests and the terms of service for usage conditions.
