JLPT N2 Comparison

〜ものの vs 〜にもかかわらず vs 〜ながらも mono no · ni mo kakawarazu · nagara mo

ものの, にもかかわらず, and ながらも all express a contrast between an expected result and reality. ものの acknowledges a fact before qualifying it; にもかかわらず means “despite”; ながらも means “although” or “even though.” These are relatively formal expressions. ながら can also be concessive without も.

although·in spite of·even while

Structure

How do you form these three?

Plain form+ものの

買った→買ったものの. Nouns use である; な-adjectives can use な or である: 有名なものの.

Noun/Plain form+にもかかわらず

雨→雨にもかかわらず. No の after a noun. It can also open a sentence on its own.

Verb[ますstem]/い-adj/Noun+ながらも

狭い→狭いながらも, 知り→知りながらも. These often describe contrasting properties or circumstances of the same subject, but concession does not always require identical subjects.

Sentence。+とはいうものの

Sentence-initial. Concedes the previous sentence, then contradicts it.

Meaning

What's the difference between them?

ものの is about an expectation that did not pay off. 買ったものの、一度も使っていない — buying it should have led to using it, and it did not. That gap is the whole meaning, and it is why ものの so often attaches to something the speaker themselves did. It is common in essays, reports, and other formal contexts.

にもかかわらず means “despite,” often presenting a result contrary to what the preceding fact suggests. 雨にもかかわらず attaches directly to a noun; ながら can also follow some nouns directly.

ながらも presents a concession: 狭いながらも、居心地のいい部屋だ. The も reinforces the contrast; plain ながら can already mean “although,” as in 知りながら.

These expressions overlap. Choose according to the contrast, the words they attach to, and the register; the examples illustrate tendencies rather than mutually exclusive rules.

Watch out

Where does this go wrong?

Using ものの like けど

疲れたものの、行く in conversation sounds like a written report read aloud. ものの belongs to essays and articles; spoken Japanese uses けど or のに.

雨のにもかかわらず

No の. A noun attaches straight on: 雨にもかかわらず. It is な-adjectives that need help, and they take である: 不便であるにもかかわらず.

ながら where you meant ながらも

ながら has both simultaneous-action and concessive uses. 知りながら、やめられない is already concessive; も is optional in this use.

Also asked

Questions people ask about ものの, にもかかわらず and ながらも

Which one is closest to のに?

にもかかわらず is a formal alternative to のに in many contrasts. It can also carry criticism, dissatisfaction, or praise; it is not necessarily emotionless.

Can ものの follow a noun?

Not directly. It needs である: 学生であるものの. Nouns are exactly where にもかかわらず is easiest, so in practice people reach for that one instead.

What is とはいうものの?

A sentence-opener. You state something, then push back: 安い。とはいうものの、質はそれなりだ. Think “that said” — it concedes the previous sentence rather than a clause inside this one.

Is 〜つつも the same as ながらも?

Very close, and more literary still. 悪いと思いつつも means the same as 思いながらも. つつ attaches to the masu-stem in the same way and appears mostly in writing.

Do these appear in speech at all?

にもかかわらず does, in speeches, presentations, and announcements. ものの and ながらも stay mostly on the page — you will read them far more often than you will say them.

Which is most common on the JLPT?

Learner resources often group these with intermediate grammar. Treat level labels as study guidance; this page has no evidence that one appears more frequently on the test.
