Structure

What each one attaches to

散歩 / 買い物 / 行き+がてら

散歩がてら買い物をした. Both halves happen on the same outing, and the first is the one you were doing anyway.

お礼 / ご挨拶 / お見舞い+かたがた

お礼かたがた伺いました. Nouns only, and almost always the polite お/ご ones. This is letter and business Japanese.

仕事 / 勉強の+かたわら

仕事のかたわら. A noun needs の in front; a verb takes the dictionary form. The timescale is years, not an afternoon.

出かけた+ついでに

出かけたついでに買ってきた. Same meaning as がてら with none of the formality, and far more common in speech.

Meaning

One outing, one visit, one second career

がてら is one trip. You were going for a walk anyway, so you did the shopping too: 散歩がてら買い物をした. One activity provides an occasion for another; either can be the chief purpose in context.

かたがた formally combines purposes. お礼かたがたご報告に伺いました combines thanks and a report in one visit. It is common in polite writing and business speech, and follows a noun in this use.

かたわら is a second life. 会社に勤めるかたわら、小説を書いている — holds down a job and writes novels. The two run in parallel over years, which is what separates it from the other two entirely.

Time scale helps, but it is not a hard rule. がてら and かたがた often concern a single occasion; かたわら commonly describes ongoing parallel activities. Register and the relation between the two activities also matter.

In everyday speech, ついでに or simpler phrasing may be more natural. ついでに covers what がてら does, and 〜ながら or a plain second sentence covers the rest. These three are for writing and for the JLPT.

Watch out

Where these three go wrong

かたわら for an afternoon

かたわら often describes a parallel activity sustained over time, so a single afternoon outing usually calls for がてら.

かたがた in conversation

It is letter and business Japanese. Said to a friend it sounds like reading from a formal notice — ついでに is what belongs there.

Forgetting the の before かたわら

A noun needs it: 仕事のかたわら. A verb does not — 勤めるかたわら attaches straight to the dictionary form.

Also asked

Questions people ask about がてら, かたがた and かたわら

What separates them?

Timescale. がてら is one outing, かたがた one formal occasion, and かたわら a stretch of years.

がてら or ついでに?

Same meaning, different register. ついでに is what people say; がてら is what gets written, and it is slightly more elegant.

What does がてら attach to?

A noun or a ます-stem: 散歩がてら, 駅へ行きがてら. Not the dictionary form.

Is かたがた only for polite nouns?

Almost. In practice it appears with お礼, ご挨拶, お見舞い, ご報告 — the vocabulary of formal visits, which is where the pattern lives.

Can かたわら take a verb?

Yes, in the dictionary form: 会社に勤めるかたわら. The の is only needed when a noun comes first — 仕事のかたわら. A verb attaches directly.

Do I need these to pass N1?

For recognition, yes — all three appear in the reading and grammar sections. For production, ついでに and a second sentence will carry you through almost any real situation.
