から and ので both give reasons; ので often sounds more explanatory or less direct. から can foreground the speaker’s reasoning and is common with requests or invitations. ので often presents a circumstance as background, including in polite explanations. These are tendencies, not guarantees of politeness. After a noun or な-adjective, use だから but なので.

Structure
How do から and ので attach?
Verb・い-adj・な-adj だ・Noun だ+から
疲れたから, 静かだから, 学生だから. Note the だ — から takes the copula in its plain form.
Verb・い-adj・な-adj な・Noun な+ので
疲れたので, 静かなので, 学生なので. な, not だ — this is the difference that gets marked wrong on exams.
〜ので+〜てください / 〜ます
危ないので、下がってください. A common way to give a reason before a polite request.
Reason+から
行きたくないから。 から can stand as an answer giving a reason. ので can also end an utterance when the following conclusion or request is left understood.
Meaning
から vs ので vs ため
から puts your reasoning on the table. It is a claim you are making, which is exactly why it pairs naturally with commands, invitations and statements of intent: 危ないから行くな, 暇だから行こう.
ので often presents a circumstance as background. It can make an explanation sound less direct, but it does not automatically make a statement objective or polite. Both forms can give neutral reasons.
This is one reason polite explanations often use ので.体調が悪いので休みます reports a fact. 体調が悪いから休みます reads closer to “I'm ill, so I'm taking the day” — the reasoning is yours and you are asserting it at them.
The attachment rule is where marks get lost. After a な-adjective or noun, から takes だ and ので takes な: 静かだから but 静かなので. 静かだので is wrong.
ため(に) is the written third option.大雨のため、電車が止まりました — formal, impersonal, and what you see on a station noticeboard. More typical of formal writing and announcements than casual conversation.
Watch out
Where から and ので go wrong
静かだので
After a な-adjective or noun, ので takes な: 静かなので, 学生なので. Only から takes だ.
Using から in an apology to a superior
遅れたから、すみません presses your reasoning at someone you are apologising to. 遅れましたので、申し訳ありません reports the fact and leaves the judgement to them.
Ending a sentence with ので
から can close a sentence on its own — 行かない。忙しいから。ので can also end a conversational utterance: 明日は用事がありますので……. The listener infers the unstated conclusion, such as declining an invitation.
Also asked
Questions people ask about から and ので
Is ので always more polite than から?
No. ので often sounds less direct, but politeness depends on wording, tone, and context. から is also used in polite explanations; neither form is inherently rude.
What's the attachment rule?
After a verb or い-adjective they behave identically. After a な-adjective or noun, から takes だ and ので takes な: 学生だから vs 学生なので.
Can I use ので with a request?
Yes, and it is the standard shape: 危ないので、下がってください. から with a command sounds like you are ordering someone on your own authority.
What is んで?
The spoken contraction of ので. 忙しいんで is casual and extremely common in speech, and is generally avoided in formal writing.
から or ため?
Reason-giving ため(に) is common in formal writing and announcements: 大雨のため運休. から and ので are more usual in casual conversation; this is a register tendency, not a ban on spoken ため.
Can I put ので after ます?
Yes. すぐに参りますので — attaching after the polite form raises the register further and is common in service and business Japanese. ですので works the same way.
