JLPT N3Comparison

〜わけがない vs 〜わけではない vs 〜はずがない wake ga nai · wake dewa nai · hazu ga nai

わけがない and はずがない both mean “there is no way”; わけではない means “it is not that” or “not necessarily.” The first two strongly reject a possibility and often overlap. わけではない rejects an inference or limits a claim; it does not necessarily assert the opposite. It can finish a sentence without a following “but” clause.

there's no way, obviously·that's not to say·there's no way, given what I know

Structure

How do you form these three?

動詞(辞書形・ない形)/い形容詞/な形容詞+な/名詞+な+わけがない

A flat "there's no way," reasoned from common sense or character. Nouns take な here — 学生なわけがない, not の.

動詞(辞書形・ない形)/い形容詞/な形容詞+な/名詞+な+わけではない

Same connectors as わけがない, opposite job: it doesn't deny, it softens. 忙しいわけではない ≠ "I'm free."

動詞(辞書形・ない形)/い形容詞/な形容詞+な/名詞+の+はずがない

The exception: nouns take の here, not な — 学生のはずがない. Everything else lines up with わけ.

動詞(辞書形・ない形)/い形容詞/な形容詞+な/名詞+な+わけない

Drop が in casual speech: そんなわけない means exactly そんなわけがない, just faster.

Meaning

What's the difference between these three?

わけがない and はずがない strongly reject a possibility. わけではない rejects an inference or limits a claim, often corresponding to “it is not that” or “not necessarily.”

わけがない can reject a possibility strongly: そんな高い店に彼が行くわけがない. The speaker may rely on facts, knowledge of the person, or their own judgment.

はずがない rejects what seems incompatible with the speaker’s expectations or information. It often overlaps with わけがない; specific evidence versus common sense is not a strict dividing line.

わけではない can reject an explanation or an overgeneralization. 嫌いなわけではないが、あまり食べない denies that dislike explains eating little; it does not assert that the speaker likes the food.

Watch out

Where does this go wrong?

はず takes の before a noun — わけ takes な

学生のはずだ takes の. 学生なわけがない takes な. Every other connector (verb plain, i-adjective plain, na-adjective+な) lines up between the two — nouns are the one place they split, and it's easy to carry の across from はず into わけ out of habit.

わけではない is not a strong denial

嫌いなわけではない doesn't mean you like it — it means "that's not automatically true," leaving room in between. Reach for it when you want to soften a claim, not flatly deny it; for a flat denial, わけがない or はずがない is the right tool.

わけがない can sound blunt to someone's face

Both わけがない and はずがない can sound dismissive when rejecting someone else’s view. Tone and context matter; はずがない is not automatically a polite alternative.

Also asked

Questions people ask about these three

Is わけがない stronger than はずがない?

Both express strong denial. はずがない foregrounds an expectation that something cannot be true, but the expressions overlap; neither is restricted to a particular kind of evidence.

Does わけではない mean "no"?

It can reject an inference or qualify a generalization. 忙しいわけではない means “it is not that I am busy”; the precise scope of the denial depends on context.

Can I use わけにはいかない here too?

That's a different pattern — it means "can't very well do X" because of an obligation, not "there's no way X is true." Don't mix it up with わけがない.

Why does 学生のはずだ take の but 学生なわけがない take な?

In these patterns, はず takes の after a noun, while わけ commonly takes な or である. Learn 学生のはず and 学生なわけ as useful basic forms.

Is わけない the same as わけがない?

Same meaning, casual register. Dropping が is common in speech — そんなわけない is what you'd actually hear from a friend, not そんなわけがない.

Can わけではない end a sentence like のに does?

Yes. わけではない can be a complete sentence. A following が-clause is possible, but not required.
